More about coaching

What is coaching?

Coaching process

Whether it is executive coaching, life coaching, career coaching or leadership coaching, coaching is a conversation – or a series of conversations – between the client and coach to help the client move forward in their thinking and understanding of their own circumstances. The diagram above illustrates the critical steps involved in a typical coaching conversation to enable the client to bring about a change in thinking, behaviour or belief.

It can be used to help understand and resolve specific work or personal issues, to build self-esteem and self-confidence in order to produce better, more efficient results or to move towards specific goals and objectives.

During a coaching session, a coach uses a combination of listening, questioning, observation and feedback to create a conversation that gives the client:

  • In-depth focus and attention on the matters discussed;
  • Increased self-esteeem and self-confidence;
  • A greater self-awareness and appreciation of own circumstances;
  • Increased motivation and personal effectiveness;
  • Improved ability to move forward on issues and goals; and
  • Increased resourcefulness and resilience.

Why have a coach?

Coaching has many labels. It is often difficult to know where to start when looking for the right coach. It is important to find someone with whom you are comfortable and who you trust. You should find out about their style of coaching, their qualifications and their background.

My coaching style at LifeForward is empathetic, challenging and action-focused. I bring an understanding of the challenges of working in a highly competitive business and I believe that everyone has the ability to succeed.

Coaching provides a space to think, a time for reflection and an opportunity to focus on the future. The impact that coaching can have for an individual, an organisation or a team can be significant. Coaching can

  • Dramatically improve performance and motivation;
  • Remove mental barriers to success;
  • Give improved clarity and movement on areas of difficulty or concern.

Coaching can give you that thinking space. Working with an experienced coach, individuals may find it easier to pause and reflect; to think about the future. Through in-depth listening and focused questioning, a coach can help an individual tap into their inner resources and identify critical questions they need to ask themselves in order to find solutions to issues and problems they may face, to set goals for the future or to simply think ahead of the game.

The coaching philosophy at LifeForward is quite simple – We all have the ability to take control of our lives and make the key decisions that will shape our future, whether at work or in our personal lives.

The coaching engagement

Usually a coaching engagement consists of a series of (usually 3 – 6) coaching sessions of approximately 2 hours each. These coaching sessions are spread over a period of time often with a gap of about 4 – 6 weeks between sessions. The exact scope, cost and duration of each engagement is agreed between the coach and the individual at the start of the engagement.

All coaching conversations are treated in the strictest confidence.
